Dredging a lake can be an expensive and arduous task, but it’s necessary for most man-made lakes, scientists say.

Dredging is a critical component of any manmade lakes .

As solids and sediment build up, they may have to be dredged more frequently than natural bodies of water. When dams are installed to form a man-made lake, the natural progression of water and solids runoff is slowed down, which makes the sediment build up faster.

Over time, the sediment begins to fill in the lakes’ bottoms, which can be harmful to fish, can impact the water quality, cause the growth of algae and impact swimming and boating quality.

A lot of work and evaluation is done prior to dredging and afterwards to make sure that not only was the job done properly, but to see where the solids build up, flow patterns, impact of dredging on the solids and  lake bottom. Below is a Bathymetric map Lester performed prior to dredging this May in Presidents Bay.
